Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has announced a revision of its curriculum for undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and PhD programs. The Institute makes such changes and revisions every decade to align with the growing educational world and stay relevant. The revised structure is set to be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year, which aims to enhance academic flexibility, promote hands-on learning, and align courses with global education standards.
IIT Delhi Changes in Undergraduate Programs
The new UG curriculum introduces several functions and options that will open doors to different opportunities. Among the most notable changes is the introduction of an Honours add-on to the B.Tech degree, allowing students to pursue an advanced specialization. Additionally, students will now have the option to file a petition for an integrated B.Tech + M.Tech degree at the end of their third year, enabling them to graduate with both degrees in five years. This will help students to pursue and achieve greater degrees in less time, granting more time for professional development.
According to the new curriculum, students will begin engaging with their departments in their first year, a shift from the previous structure where departmental exposure was delayed. Additionally, the institute has also mandated small class sizes for first-year courses, ensuring deeper faculty-student interaction and personalized learning experiences.
Another significant innovation is the integration of AI-based code generators into introductory programming courses. This initiative aims to familiarize students with artificial intelligence tools, enabling them to tackle complex problems efficiently while learning responsible AI usage.
IIT Delhi Postgraduate and PhD Program Enhancements
The MTech and MS (Research) programs have also undergone substantial revisions. The updated structure emphasizes project-based learning, with mandatory components such as a capstone project and a summer internship, allowing students to gain industry experience. These practical exposures aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications.
For PhD scholars, the new curriculum focuses on independent research, ethical reasoning, and collaboration with industry partners. The revised structure aims to produce highly skilled researchers capable of addressing pressing societal challenges while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.
Introduction of New Academic Programs
In addition to curriculum changes, IIT Delhi has announced the launch of three new academic programs starting from the 2025-26 session:
B.Tech in Design: Entry via JEE (Advanced) and UCEED qualification.
BS in Chemistry: IIT Delhiās first standalone BS program, with entry via JEE (Advanced).
M.Tech in Photonics: Entry via GATE or equivalent qualification.
This renewal of the curriculum is made by the institute once every decade. This is derived from various factors such as extensive feedback from thousands of students, alumni, faculty, and industry experts. The overarching goal is to create a more outcome-based academic structure across engineering, sciences, and humanities.
