JEE Main 2021 Update: Understanding the Ranking Mechanism
The last phase of the JEE Main Exam is currently underway and shall conclude on September 2, 2021. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to release the answer keys soon and let candidates challenge them. Therefore, sources say that the final answer keys and results would be announced by the NTA around September 10, 2021, which is 1 day before the commencement of the JEE Advanced applications.
SCORING AND RANKING SYSTEM
This year’s result will display the overall rank list and include the scores in the form of percentile. Percentile is a relative marking system in which the highest marks obtained by the student are taken as 100 percentile. The rest of the marks are determined according to this.
This year will see a new tie-breaker formula in which the primacy given to older aged candidates shall no more be followed. The tie-breaking formula will give the foremost primacy to the scores in mathematics followed by those in physics and then of chemistry. Additionally, percentiles will be calculated up to 7 decimal points to further prevent ties.
Furthermore, if the candidates have appeared in multiple sessions, only their best scores will be used to determine their percentile and overall rank.
The total score of a student in all the sessions is collated and an overall percentile will be determined. This shall be known as the NTA Scores and will be paramount in setting the qualifying cutoffs.
The NTA hasn’t made any official statement regarding the JEE Main Exam result for admissions into the top engineering colleges. Therefore as of yet, there is no official date for the declaration of answer keys and results; what exists currently are mere speculations.
