NEET PG Counselling Starting from Wednesday

NEET PG Counselling Starting from Wednesday

After several delays since the exam was held, counselling for the NEET PG Admissions will finally be held from January 12th, 2022 i.e. from Wednesday. This development comes after the decision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India over the NEET PG Reservation Case.

NEET-PG is a qualifying exam given by medical students who seek admission to one of the over 100 private and government colleges. Those clearing it are eligible for “counselling”

Through this process, they are directed to universities and colleges based on marks and chosen specialisation. Here, they work under the supervision of senior colleagues.

    NEET PG Reservation Case

On July 29th, 2021, the Centre and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) came out with a notification calling for a 10% reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Only those with a family income of Rs. 8 lakh/annum are eligible for it.

This invited petitions challenging this provision, which led to the indefinite postponement of the NEET PG admissions till the Supreme Court reached a decision. What the days leading up to the decision saw was nationwide protests by the doctors fraternity including the FORDA (Federation of Resident Doctors Association) and brutal police crackdown on them.

    The Situation Now

After the almost 4-month delay, the counseling process for the passers of the NEET PG exam will be held, keeping the 27% reservation for the OBCs and 10% for the EWS. In defense of this rather controversial decision, the centre said that in doing so, this counselling process will begin in national interest.

Once this process is concluded, over 45,000 young up and coming doctors will become a part of the medical workforce. This is an extremely important and timely development considering the rising cases of Covid-19 and Omicron and in turn, the need for an increased number of medical personnel.
