NEET PG Update: SC Hearing PG Admissions Case Today?

NEET PG Update: SC Hearing PG Admissions Case Today?

On Monday the 3rd of January 2021, the Centre requested the Honorable Supreme Court to take up the hearing of petitions regarding the EWS Quota Registration on an urgent basis. This reservation is meant to be for the AIQ seats of the NEET PG Exam Admissions.

    Court’s Response

In a response to this, Justice DY Chandrachud has promised consultations with CJI NV Ramanna, which is evident from the quote made by Justice Chandrachud yesterday below: -

“The only thing is that it was a 3-judge bench matter. Justice Surya Kant is sitting with the Chief Justice and Justice Vikram Nath is on a different bench. I will have a word with the Chief Justice. I will request the Chief Justice if it’s possible administratively to constitute a separate bench. I will speak with the CJ immediately at the end of work today.”

The hearing to possibly take place today (Jan 4) or tomorrow (Jan 5) most probably. Originally, the hearing was scheduled for January 6th, 2022.

    Committee Recommendations

Earlier on the recommendations of the Supreme Court, the Centre had established a 3-member committee to look into the validity of the Rs. 8 Lakh/year limit for the EWS quota. The following were the recommendations made by the committee: -

    1. 1- The Rs. 8 Lakh criteria should be kept as changing the criteria mid-way will lead to complications. Moreover, more than 91% of the students availing this quota have a family income of less than Rs. 5 Lakh.
    2. 2- Families possessing land of at least 5 acres (or above) are not eligible under this criteria, irrespective of their income. However, this might be added starting from next year.
    3. 3- Another criteria that can be added from the next year is that regarding the residential assets.
