In 2002, Sri Ramanujar Engineering College (SREC) was founded under the auspices of the Swamy Educational Trust. The college has AICTE approval and is associated with Anna University. It provides engineering degree programmes at the bachelor's and master's levels. The college holds an ISO 9001:2008 certification and is approved by the NAAC. The institute provides undergraduate and graduate specialisations in engineering and management programmes. Each year, 240 students are enrolled in the institution, 60 in each discipline. SREC is in agreement with some well-known organisations.

On August 17, 1992, Mrs. N. Vallikkannu established the Swamy Educational Trust. The creator of the Trust intended for it to be established in order to fulfil the public's need for education and to further the goals of community and rural development. Its initial goal was to provide technical education to both urban and rural populations. Srimathi Lakshmiammal Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School AND Madras Industrial Technical Centre were established in Chromepet with this concept. Later, Sri Balaji Polytechnic College and Sri Ramanujar Engineering College—two of Chennai's best of their kind—were established to provide advanced technical education and to further the careers of young people.
