IIT-BHU Revamps Academics: 5-Year Dual Degrees Converted into BTech Seats
IIT BHU has made the announcement regarding 5 year dual degree courses, stating that these courses will no longer be offered in 2025. Considering the suggestions provided by students and the NEP regulations, IIT BHU has changed all IDD seats to regular BTech seats in the corresponding branches. Beginning July 2025, overall undergraduate JEE Advanced allocations will stay consistent. This decision results from a thorough curriculum restructuring conducted during the 2024-25 academic year. The primary goal is to bring all undergraduate programs in line with India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes flexibility and student choice.
This decision has been made after considering the duration that candidates need to spend in order to complete their degree. A major limitation was the lack of exit options: students could not graduate with only a BTech after four years. In IIT BHU currently 17 IDD programs across diverse fields. These are Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, Ceramic Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Physics, Bioengineering with MTech in Biomedical Technology, Mining Engineering, Biochemical Engineering with MTech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Materials Science and Technology, Metallurgical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Computer Science and Engineering.
IIT BHU Four Exit Pathways for IDD Program
Option 1: Minor in Another Discipline - This is available after the fourth semester and it adds a secondary field's basic knowledge to the core without lengthening it.
Option 2: Major in Another Discipline - Also post-fourth semester, this shifts focus to a new primary area, extending the degree to five years.
Option 3: MTech IDD in Primary Discipline - Joins after the sixth semester, leading to the integrated dual degree.
Option 4: Standard BTech - Completes the four-year degree in the chosen field.
The Senate and Board of Governors of IIT BHU granted formal approval to these reforms. The institute made it clear that the decision is purely due to strategic alignment with NEP and not due to faculty shortages or lack of resources. "It was a restructuring to give students more flexibility and choice," the officials stressed, as reported by getadmissioninfo.
