IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi Scales Up: 400 Students to Join Next Academic Session
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is rapidly scaling its presence in the Middle East through its Abu Dhabi campus, which is poised to nearly double its student body in the coming year. According to Shantanu Roy, the campus’s Executive Director, IIT Delhi currently has around 12,000 students, while the Abu Dhabi campus has 182 students. Roy told Indian media during a recent interaction at the IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus that the number could reach 400 next year.
IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi Student Growth to 400
This growth is a major milestone for the institute, which serves as the first international outpost of the renowned IIT Delhi. While the parent campus in India caters to a massive community of 12,000 students, the Abu Dhabi branch is carving out a specialized niche designed to bridge the educational standards of India with the strategic economic goals of the United Arab Emirates.
IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi Campus Launch and Programs
IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi, the first international campus of IIT Delhi, has been officially launched in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, following an agreement between India and the UAE. It offers B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programs in engineering and sustainability. Admission is through the JEE Advanced for Indian students and a special UAE-based exam (CAET) for residents. It provides a world-class engineering education. Along with stipends and benefits, to a diverse range of students.
One of the primary drivers behind this expansion is the campus’s alignment with the UAE's national priorities. The IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi curriculum has been specifically tailored to support this transition because the Emirates aggressively diversifies its economy away from a historical dependence on fossil fuels. The academic focus is mostly on forward-looking sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), sustainable energy and smart materials.
AI and Sustainability Focus with MBZUAI Partnership
Roy says that these subjects are not necessary for the Delhi campus, but in Abu Dhabi, they have been designed keeping in mind the specific geography and economic environment of the Middle East. For example, the campus is working closely with local entities like the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) to ensure that its AI research and teaching are at the forefront of regional needs.
One Global IIT Delhi Institution Philosophy
The institutional philosophy behind the campus is based on the idea of "one global institution."Roy clarified that despite the geographical distance, the Abu Dhabi campus is not an isolated location but an integral part of the IIT Delhi ecosystem. Since its inauguration on September 2, 2024, the campus has pursued a path of continuous academic expansion. What began as a small group of 17 students in a master’s program has quickly expanded to two undergraduate programs.
Future plans include introducing a new undergraduate and master's program each year, as well as continuously expanding PhD opportunities. This structured growth is designed to meet the growing demand for world-class technical education around the world, both in Europe and Asia.
IIT Abu Dhabi Admissions: JEE Advanced and CAET
The admissions process also reflects this blend of Indian excellence and international reach. Undergraduate seats are filled through two main channels: JEE Advanced which is the rigorous entrance exam used by all IITs and the Combined Admission Entrance Test (CAET). JEE Advanced is for traditional Indian applicants, while CAET is specifically designed for UAE residents and international expatriates who have lived in the country for at least five years. This dual-track system assures a diverse student population that reflects the UAE's multicultural demographics.
Khalifa City Transit to Permanent Sustainable Campus
Currently, the institution operates from a "transit campus" in Khalifa City. While this facility offers high-standard infrastructure, Roy said, "This is not our permanent campus. It's a transit campus. Even though the infrastructure is very good, it's still a transit campus. It will take a few years for us to become a permanent campus."
"But whenever that happens, we will obviously be reaching the best international standards in buildings and so on, and sustainability will be another big aspect of planning that campus, making it as sustainable as possible."
India-UAE Partnership for Future Engineers
The IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus is more than just a satellite school. It's a major partnership between the two countries. The campus is positioning itself as a hub for the next generation of engineers and technologists, leveraging IT's academic heritage and the UAE's lofty innovation goals.
