NTA Likely to Use Facial Recognition in Upcoming Entrance Tests

NTA Likely to Use Facial Recognition in Upcoming Entrance Tests

The National Testing Agency (NTA) would be introducing facial recognition-based verification in the sessions of NEET, JEE and other pan Indian examinations from 2026. The step is meant to strengthen the security of national-level exams and curb impersonation and other malpractices. The idea gained momentum after a pilot project during NEET 2025, where Aadhaar-based facial authentication was tested at select centres in Delhi. The pilot was conducted jointly by NTA, UIDAI, and NIC to check whether facial recognition could work smoothly during exams. Officials said the trial helped assess the system’s accuracy and feasibility.

Why Facial Recognition Is Being Introduced

Competitions such as the NEET Exam and the JEE Exam are tough and have students in the number of lakhs appearing every year. In the past couple of years, security of exam papers, existence of impersonating candidates and identity fraud have become major issues. Facial recognition, which ensures that the candidates who appeared in the examination are real people, will also increase public confidence in the examination system.

How the New System Will Work

Under the new regime, candidates could be asked to upload live photographs while filling out application forms. This is to confirm that the real student is filling up the application and not someone else. Real-time facial scans are captured at exam centers and matched against stored data using AI-driven facial biometric technology. Candidates will be allowed to take the exam only after they have been successfully verified.

Section of greater examination reforms

These changes are the enactment of suggestions by the Radhakrishnan Committee, constituted in the wake of paper leak charges in NEET-UG 2024. The committee, chaired by former ISRO chief R Radhakrishnan, recommended sweeping changes to enhance exam security and transparency.

Among others, short-term recommendations are multi-level biometric checks at the time of registration, examination and counselling. The committee also recommended a “Digi-Exam” platform, along the lines of DigiYatra, for the conduct of biometric-enabled digital exams.

What This Means for Students

Facial recognition, if used, would help make exams more fair, safe and reliable. Though students may have to get used to additional verification procedures, the system is designed to cut down on malpractices and shield the clean candidates. After a slew of preparations, NTA is expected to introduce the system for all major entrance examinations from next year, which will be a major shift in examination culture in India.
